April 2 2014 is International Children's Book Day

2014 International Children’s Book Day

International Children’s Book Day is celebrated on April 2nd because that day is also the birthday of the Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. He wrote many wonderful stories for kids; the most famous are The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling.

Around here, we love any story that reminds us to be kind to others. The Ugly Duckling is all about treating everyone with love and friendship, even if they are different from us. A poor little bird is born in a barnyard but he is very plain and totally different from all the other little ducklings. He does not look like anyone else on the farm and he becomes very lonely. The others treat him badly and bully him until he decides to leave the farm all alone. He soon grows up and becomes a beautiful swan, the best-looking bird of all. His transformation reminds us that we are always changing into something better than before.

The Ugly Duckling is a lesson about treating everyone with gentleness and kindness. Sometimes a person who is special in some way can feel very alone. Not everyone looks and acts the same, do they? What a boring world it would be if we all were exactly the same! If you know someone who looks or acts differently, it might be a good idea to reach out and be a friend. Are there kids in your school who always sit alone? They probably want to have a friend just like you!

Being kind is easy. Mister Spunky and His Friends is all about the importance of love, friendship and helping those with special needs. Showing friendship takes a little bit of extra thought, but it is worth it when you can help someone else smile! Do you know someone who needs a friend? Why not offer them a big smile the next time you see them? I bet you will get a smile in return.
